Hudson Valley Region Program Update

March 8, 2010

Seasonal Winter Feedback Meeting

 -AND-

Advanced Summer Coach Sports Rules Certification

Both topics will be offered at this meeting....please attend the one closest to you!!!!

(see Coach's Corner for more info)

These meetings are key to us improving what it is we do (or, if in your opinion, aren't doing).  Please take a

moment to locate the one closest to your geographic location and join us.  We are seeking constructive

criticism about what we did or failed to do in this past WINTER season with the endemic focus on the

REGIONAL and LOCAL levels.  It is really very helpful for us to hear directly from you, so please, if you

have the time, we'd really love for you to join us.

Please see below for the meeting being offered in the region this month:

Thursday, 11 MARCH - Chili's - Nanuet (Rockland County) 6:30PM

Thursday, 25 MARCH - Mahoney's - Poughkeepsie (Dutchess County) 6:30PM

Wednesday, 31 MARCH - Pumpernickel's - Ardsley (Westchester County) 6:30PM

For exact addresses, call the office: (845) 765-2497.  Thanks!!!

2010 NATIONAL GAMES - OMAHA/LINCOLN, NEBRASKA

One athlete from the Hudson Valley Region was selected to represent New York State at this event in

July, 2010.  Jhonatan Valencia, one of the region's pentathlete's from the Sound Shore Stars program,

has been involved with SO for well over a decade, having participated in the PSSL with Mamaroneck

Public Schools, then graduating into the Stars program.  A second HVR athlete, Anthony Ingraham, from the Dutchess program, was selected as an alternate to attend, also as a pentathlete.  Please join us in congratulating these two fine young men and athletes.

Greetings!

Okay, here's the deal...it (this) can't get any more simplistic and plain than this!  The colors are boring and(substandard...eventually, they'll change to another set of boring and standard.  I cannot please everyone....though I am trying.

Have a sense of humor....Smile when you read this....I have one when I write it, as well as when I read what you write!

Thanks and have a great day!

  Ellen

IMPORTANT DATE: Tuesday, 4 MAY, 2010

Hold the date!!!

The College of New Rochelle has graciously offered the

PSSL a wonderful opportunity.  On Tuesday, 4 May, they are

opening their facility (gym) and through coordination with

their Director of Athletics and Beth Walsh, are offering you an

afternoon of sports activity with sports related give-aways

   hosted by their student-athletes.

It is my understanding that the CNR student-athletes will

set-up stations in the gym focused on the give-aways that

the PSSL athletes will take home at the end of the day.  The

student-athletes will be in attendance for the duration to

   interact with the PSSL student-athletes.

Please check your schedule immediately to take advantage

of this great opportunity.  The gym will open from 2PM-6PM

on Tuesday, 4 MAY, 2010.  Please call Ellen at (845) 765-2497.

or email me at Ellen Pikula Thanks.

OTHER STUFF:  OFFICIALS....still people...Mat traveled all the

way to a school last week to find the school closed (snow).

All it takes is a phone call/email.  Let's go, huh???  You pay for

it, regardless, so I would think you'd want to save the fee...

it's your dime, but it's frustrating.  It's getting difficult to find

people to go to particular schools.  Once bitten...

Past Events

6 March - Basketball Team & Skills - Somers HS and JF Kennedy

                Catholic HS

This event took place for the tenth year, at these two

respective schools.  The event would not have happened,

had it not been for Katie and George Greczylo and

Leslie Stein and their consummate skills at gathering and

organizing all the volunteers.  From all of us to all of

                you...THANKS!!!!

We would also like to thank the folks over at Kennedy for

their outreach efforts.  Too, and always, thanks to the

Yorktown Elks and Marlene.  Special note to thank the

Somers Lions for their volunteer efforts, too.

The event itself saw sixteen teams (Local) from Northern

Westchester, (and a couple that were invited in, from

outside the county/region) compete in basketball team

Somers High School. The skills portion of the event saw

well over 100 athletes compete in the skills stations at

                Kennedy Catholic HS, my alma-mater.

We must have had in excess of 75 volunteers for the day.

So thanks to all of you.  Special thanks to my friends for

jumping in to ref: Mike, Greg, John and Marty from the

Elks, Eileen, Kevin and Beth...and Spencer from Somers.

You guys did an outstanding job.  Finally, and never least

...to Nancy Hogan-Logan, whom in tons of pain, stayed

almost the entire day...thanks so much!  You are

incredible. And to Sue Jones...for all that you do....I don't

know what it is, exactly,  but I know it's important stuff

and Nancy and I couldn't get through the day without you!

Coach's Corner

Coaches, we really need you to come out to one of the feedback meetings. Please note that we are adding the Coach's Conference Advanced Certification on Summer Sports Rules to each of these meetings, so please come out and join us!!!

Please take a look at what meets your demographic location best and let us know what we do that worked, or didn't, for your program this past Winter season.  We really NEED to hear from you.

We are currently working on re-scheduling the Athletics (Track & Field Training School portion of the Coach's Conference, as well.  I am waiting to hear back from a school regarding availability.  As soon as we confirm a date and time, we will publish it.  Thanks for your patience and understanding regarding our inability to control the weather.  We are working closely with a higher being to tweak said control, but have yet to master that.

THANKS!  And thanks for all that you've done and continue to do.

You are the best coaches in all of Special Olympics that I have personally come to know!  So, again, THANKS!!!!!

Volunteer Opportunities:

Take a look at the calendar of events above.  Any date and event listed in RED is where we could really use volunteer help.  That's not to say we couldn't use a handful of volunteers at some of the other events, but we need a LOTTA' help at the ones in RED!!!

If you have any questions, feel free to call me at (845) 765-2497 or email me at Ellen Pikula Thanks, E.
