Complex, courtesy of Yonkers Parks & Rec. and the Yonkers Public
Schools. Special thanks to Mat Longo for all his assistance in
making this event possible.
This event saw over 100 competitors from Dutchess and
Westchester counties vying for the Gold. We had several return
volunteers and volunteer groups that aided in a truly successful
event. Thanks to Marlene, Eileen and Norm for always being there
to help run the show!
Finally, as a highlight at Opening Ceremonies, we had an athlete
from the Westchester School lead the group in the pledge of
allegiance and then she sang a wonderful rendition of the National
Anthem. Thanks so much to Denise Riley, one of the competitors
for her stellar performance.

7 December, 2008 – Unified Regional Bowling Competition was hosted at a new site this
year! Over 140 combined Special Olympians and Special Partners
took to the lanes for an awesome competition! This event has
continued to grow each and every year of its’ existence! Athletes
from Dutchess, Orange, Rockland and Westchester came out on this
lightly snowy morning to compete for medals!
Special thanks to Vito at JV Lanes for making a spot for our
competition in the house calendar.
Our most sincere thanks to both my and Linda’s personal friends
and colleagues for helping make this event the success that it was.
Thanks, too, to all the coaches that gave up a Sunday to give your
athletes another competitive opportunity! You are the best!!!

They are a relatively new training club and would like to get some competitive playing experience at home prior to heading off to the Regional Competition! PAST EVENTS

30 – October, 2008 – Regional Volleyball Skills – Mt. Pleasant Rec. Ctr.
This event saw over 35 athletes compete in several divisions on a
weeknight for medals. The coaches provided a quality competition
for all in attendance. Special thanks to the Sport Directors: Donna
Asher and Suzanne Elson for putting on a great event for these
athletes. Your efforts are much appreciated.

1 November, 2008 – Regional Volleyball Team Competition – Larchmont – Hommocks
This event saw about 130 athletes compete in four divisions for
medals. The competition that day was awesome. There were
pairing games, followed by pool play, followed by medal rounds.
There was a lot of volleyball going on! Credit this to Ms. Suzanne
Elson, the Sport Director of this event for in excess of 10 years.
Special thanks to Suzanne for everything from securing the site and
getting volunteers and officials to calling us six months in advance
to secure the date for the following year!

8 November, 2008 – Winter Coach’s Conference – at Taconic DDSO
over 35 individuals registered to attend this conference for various
portions. 11 new coaches attended the General Session, 17
attended the advanced coaches certification to hear the guest
speaker: Dr. Mary Rodda-Gaudino. Dr. R-G was brought in to
discuss health, well-being, stress reduction and nutrition among our
athletes and for the coaches themselves. This conference offered
sport certifications in Basketball, Floor Hockey and Aquatics, too.
Special Thanks to Kevin Riley for his efforts in securing the facility
and his help in Basketball and to Kathi Nolan for teaching the

Orange)
This competition hosted more than 115 athletes from Dutchess,
Rockland, Sullivan and Orange counties. This was the first time the
event was hosted at this particular site. The athletes loved the
venue and the competition was fierce. A wonderful day was had by
all in attendance. Special thanks to David Harris for bailing us out
and singing God Bless America when the sound system failed and we
couldn’t play the National Anthem. Special thanks to ALL the coaches
for getting up extra early on a Sunday to allow your athletes to
compete at this awesome venue! You are the best!

15 November, 2008 – Adaptive (MATP) Games – St. Agatha’s (Rockland)
This event was postponed due to loss of heat in the gym in which it
was to be held. We are seeking a re-schedule date in February,
perhaps March, weather (and gym) permitting.

PAST EVENTS

PIONEER SPORTS SCHOOL LEAGUE

Rumor has it that Putnam Valley and perhaps even Brewster have interest in joining our group of current schools. They may come in full-fledged, or perhaps, just nibble around the edges to start. Putnam Valley is particularly interested in Track & Field, while Brewster has seemed more interested in the younger set. I will keep you posted as to the workings. I expect to hear more once school starts. We’re almost there, are we not? Speaking of which, did Margo really retire? I heard rumors yes, then not so much…hmmm.

Please call me if anyone wishes to host the pre-season meeting with a date or two in late September or early October that works…preferably a 10:30am or so meeting. If everyone would kindly send a good day (Monday, Tuesday, etc.) email to me as to your preference, I will assemble them and pick out the most conducive for the majority.

Hope you enjoyed your summer!!!

Pictures from that event are available online at: http://www.specialolympicsny.org/ (from there, seek out the photos and videos links). All of the athletes had a great time, won a ton of medals and ribbons,
and got some pretty nice uniforms, too. Thanks to the SONY staff to for putting it all together. Special thanks to our coaches for drudging through the bus rides, sleeping (or not) on really, really HARD beds for three days, and just busting butt to get it done both before (meds, etc.) and during the games. To my nurses…what can be said? Thank you, thank you, thank you. The problems never end, you never stop fixing things. You are the best. The Absolut (nope, not a typo) best!
