PAST EVENTS

OCTOBER 14, 2006 - Lauren Rizzetta Memorial Bowling Competition held at White
Plains bowl. This local event saw just shy of 300 athletes compete and
have a wonderful day. A great time was had by all. Lauren's mom was
in attendance and was grateful to see that an event held in her
daughter's name could provide such an impact for so many.

OCTOBER 28, 2006 - Regional Volleyball Competition held at the Hommocks School in
Mamaroneck. This event say 12 teams and about 45 skills athletes do
their thing in a day long event. Special thanks must be given to Suzanne
Elson and Nora Mazzone for coordinating everything from lunches, to
building use, to format of play, to officials and volunteers. Your help was
instrumental in providing an outstanding day of competition for so many!

NOVEMBER 4, 2006 - Regional Bowling held at Tarsio's in New Windsor. This event had a turn
out of just shy of 125 athletes representing every former area in the
Region. I think that might just be a first for us in our stages of infancy.
The athletes and coaches alike were very patient in allowing us time to
get the event under way, but once they started bowling, amazing things
happened. Special mention needs be made of one athlete's
performance: Chris Holmberg of Orange/Ulster BOCES shot a two-
game series averaging 217 with an opening game of 238! Congrat's to
Chris and his coach!

PAST EVENTS

FALL CLASSIC - LONG ISLAND REGION

We had over 70 scheduled to attend this event, but due to the weather (it rained for like 4 days in a row), the event was canceled.

ROCKLAND SOCCER LEAGUE

Once again, Charlie Jones continues to offer the athletes of Rockland and Westchester continuous competition every Wednesday. Each week, between 65 and 90 athletes are offered competitive opportunities. This cycle will continue changing sports as the seasons change.

ROCKLAND GOLF SKILLS COMPETITION

Thanks to Charlie Jones, the athletes of Rockland county were offered dual skills competition in latter August. These events saw 20+ plus athletes each compete in Golf Skills.

GOLF REGIONAL

This event was hosted at Mohansic Golf Course and saw over 40 athletes from our home region and From The Long Island Region compete at various levels. This was inclusive of skills, 9-hole alternate shot and 9 hole individual play.

Special thanks to Max G. the pro at Mohansic for making the day possible. Special thanks, too, to Charlie & Sue Jones, as without their guidance and knowledge, this day just could not happen! Also, thanks need be given to the Yorktown Elks and the Girl Scout Troops that showed up volunteer. That, coupled with a few others that volunteered for the day, made this event highly successful.

The Yorktown Elks also provided a room at their lodge for the awards ceremony and dinner. They were kind enough to host a bar-b-que for all of the athletes, coaches and volunteers post-event.

DUTCHESS COUNTY LOCAL BOWLING

This event was held at Mardi Bob Lanes in Poughkeepsie. Thanks to Kathi N. for putting this competition together and for her continued efforts at bettering the competitive opportunities for the athletes of the Hudson Valley. This competition had 70 athletes in attendance.

PSSL - Pioneer Sports School League

The kick-off meeting for the PSSL League went very well, as always. Schedule requests were harvested and tentative start dates for each of the four sports were established. As well, the dinner-dance date was selected and will be hosted at Fox Lane.
First-run schedules will be done this week and sent out to each school. From there, the schedules will be finalized after each school looks over the agenda. Look for it in the mail!!!!

ORANGE COUNTY LOCAL BOWLING COMPETITION

This competition was hosted at Tarsio Lanes in Newburgh. Thanks to Cathie I. and Diane P. for their continued efforts in putting on quality events for the athletes. They accomplished this, once again, this past Thursday. They orchestrated a meaningful competitive opportunity for more than 55 athletes in Orange.

SONY FALL GAMES

Every county in our Region was represented at SO New York's Fall Games in one sport or another. Over 110 athletes and 30 coaches were in attendance at Binghamton for the festivities. Our athletes competed in Bocce, Cross Country, Cycling, Equestrian, Golf, Soccer, and Softball. The smiles and medals were evidence that all had a nice and very successful time at the Games.

We also had about 50 volunteers show up for the day. I want to shout out special thanks to the Yorktown Elks for their continued volunteer support. Too, welcome back to Norm K., hello to Herman R., thanks to Bill N. and his sons. VERY special thanks to Vic B. who ran his buns off umpiring non-stop, all day! FALL COACHES CONFERENCE
This past weekend, St. Agatha’s in Rockland County hosted the Fall Coaches Conference. Thanks to Bill Furman and Charlie Jones, SO-HVR was able to certify a bunch of new coaches and recertify 21 veteran coaches in injury prevention and principles of coaching. The catered lunch was pretty good, too.
HVR also saw 11 coaches become certified in Bocce. It seems there is a growing need in our region for this sport as our population ages. The coaches are seeking new ways to engage the elder population in sports that will meet their needs.
As always, thank you to those coaches that gave up yet ANOTHER of their precious SATURDAY’S to better the lives of the athletes! You guys are the absolute BEST!

WEEKLY UPDATE

Month of June, 2006

Oh MYLANTA, it's almost July! June has come and gone, and so now, have all the Spring Games, Metro, and the Summer Games! It is at this time of year that we move into the calendar mode and start putting together our upcoming program year. But first, let’s take a quick look at the past few weeks of competitions and what's happening over the summer...

PAST EVENTS

May 13, 2006 - Spring Games EAST - Dutchess, Putnam & Westchester Counties

HOSTED at MAHOPAC HIGH SCHOOL
Over 550 athletes competed at this event where the questionable weather held out for the day. 21 individuals comprised the field of the pentathlon event alone! All of the athletes were afforded the opportunity to compete in three events plus a relay.

An unprecedented thirty (30) teams took advantage of participating in the relays this year. Overall, this was one of our best events yet. Olympic Village was run by Mr. John Brower in ine fashion. Special thanks to John for his efforts!

As always, the Healthy Athletes program was in full swing supported by Dr's Seagriff (DDS) and Hoffman (podiatry). Thanks to Doc's, their colleagues, friends & staff.

June 3, 2006 - Metro Tournament - Manhattan
Hudson Valley Region made its' presence known at Metro sending in excess of 125 athletes & coaches to the event. Though the day was rather rainy, the athletes enjoyed an extensive Olympic Village and the indoor events.

June 15-18 - SONY Summer Games - Albany
When all was said and done, the Valley sent over 200 athletes and 50 coaches to the Summer Games. The athletes were given ample opportunity to showcase their abilities in the various sports offered, as was evidenced by the clanging of the medals they wore post competition. Two Valley B-Ball teams, Devereaux and Taconic DDSO, went head-to-head, playing for the gold, in the highlight game, preemptive to the closing ceremonies.

RECAP ...
May 6, 2006 - Spring Games WEST -Rockland, Orange, Ulster & Sullivan Counties
HOSTED at WEST POINT

Over 400 athletes showed up for the competition at West Point in track & field, aquatics and adaptive games. Additionally, over 650 USMA cadets volunteered for the day. Opening Ceremonies began with skydivers being launched out of a helicopter at 4500' and landing within 5 yards of one another. The Army band was there to provide music for the duration of the ceremony.

The competition was successful, overall, but can always be better! If you have any suggestions, please feel free to drop an email regarding your concerns or CONSTRUCTIVE criticisms/solutions. (Please note that t-shirts are NOT a part of competition and will not be entertained.)

PAST EVENTS

SONY Winter Games: Special Thanks to ALL of the Coaches of the Hudson Valley Region! All of your patience and tolerance was greatly appreciated. I cannot thank you enough for your flexibility in times that were more than trying. Too, please extend my thanks to your athletes for their patience and understanding, as well. Between the bus issues and the weather, it certainly was a test of wills.

The Hudson Valley athletes as a unit came home with their share of metal after showing their mettle in weathering the “storms” presented! Sorry no pictures….my computer seemingly disallows them at this time!
